Caption
Forty-year-old mother of seven Grace Arineitwe is taking part in Farm Africa’s coffee project in Kanungu, western Uganda, funded by UK aid from the UK government.
Project or event summary
Grace’s husband, Bahati Robert, is a carpenter who gave her half an acre of coffee to take care of. She also runs a piggery project, rears goats and keeps some chickens. Grace is very thankful for the coffee processing machine given to the cooperative.
Quotes
“Before I got involved in Farm Africa’s project, I produced poor quality coffee, because I used to strip all the cherries off the branch, regardless of whether they were ripe or not. This caused cheaper prices and hence low earnings.
Now, I have joined Farm Africa and I am the chairperson of Kayonza coffee growers’ cooperative. This move has made a difference in the way I farm coffee as Farm Africa has trained us to harvest only the ripe cherries on top of practicing good farming methods like desuckering, stumping, pruning and storing dry coffee in bags placed on pallets.
This has improved the quality of the coffee I sell.
In the near future, I would like to be a big farmer, producing high-quality products, build a nice-looking house and see my children get high quality education. Finally, I would like to drive myself and have a visit to the United Kingdom.”
